Why Should I Compete?

People choose to dance competitively for many reasons. Ultimately, it comes down to your personal journey and whether or not competitions are right for you. However, if you're unfamiliar with competitions, the path to competing may seem scary and unclear! We've put together a small guide to help clarify and explain how competitions work, the benefits, and things to consider when choosing to compete. You don't have to compete to dance, but it can be a wonderful way to challenge yourself and grow your dance skills even further!

How does a Competition Work?

It depends on the type of competition! In general, they follow a similar structure. You'll typically have a set of dances (ranging from 8-10, though you don't need to compete in every dance!) and you'll have entries for each dance in different age groups that you choose. Competitions usually take all day, so expect to be in the ballroom for 4+ hours.

The competition dancefloor will typically have 8-10 couples dancing at once. Each dance takes place in a "heat" - there will be a list of heats associated with a number so you can keep track of when you're dancing. After you finish all of your heats, awards will take place either after your group is finished dancing, or all at once at the end of the competition. Depending on how many entries you choose, it's not uncommon to dance more than 20 times in a competition.

Multiple entries in each dance are recommended - you'll get more chances to show off your skills and adjust to being on a competition floor. You might just want to do one entry per dance, but that can be stressful (especially for your first competition!) because it will feel like you only have one chance to show off what you've learned.

At Invictus, we ensure all of our dancers are properly trained and prepared for competitions. We want our students to be confident and feel successful - whether or not you place - and have a good time.
